City Lights

Cockroaches are the ultimate denizen of the urban environment, the strongest, the most ubiquitous and resistant; perhaps this is why we are so disgusted by them, and do so much to deny or eliminate their presence. A dying neon cockroach announces its own death –which never arrives- artificially maintained alive by a tangle of cables that buzz with neon’s blinking rhythm, clearly belonging to technology from the past. It suggests a kind of expired suspense, a strange cross between the push of advancing technology and nostalgia, between a death foretold and something that will surely outlive us all. Like an obsolete advertisement, it announces that which is already known.
